Which group is my state in?
Malaysia splits government schools into two groups because the weekend is not the same everywhere. Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu rest on Friday and Saturday, so their schools open on Sunday. Every other state and federal territory rests on Saturday and Sunday. That one-day offset is why most dates below differ by a day between the groups.
| Group | States | School week |
|---|---|---|
| Group A | Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu | Sunday to Thursday |
| Group B | Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, WP Kuala Lumpur, WP Labuan, WP Putrajaya | Monday to Friday |
2026 school calendar, month by month
Each month's school-day figure is KPM's own count. The circular does not list ordinary public holidays, so public holidays that fall on school days are not marked one by one; their number is given under each month (5 days for Group B and 3 for Group A over the year). Group B's extra Deepavali day is shown for states other than Sarawak.
When are the 2026 school holidays?
| Holiday | Group A | Group B |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 break | Friday 20 March to Saturday 28 March 9 days | Saturday 21 March to Sunday 29 March 9 days |
| Mid-year break | Friday 22 May to Saturday 6 June 16 days | Saturday 23 May to Sunday 7 June 16 days |
| Term 2 break | Friday 28 August to Saturday 5 September 9 days | Saturday 29 August to Sunday 6 September 9 days |
| Year-end break | Friday 4 December to Thursday 31 December 28 days | Saturday 5 December to Thursday 31 December 27 days |
Day counts are KPM's own figures and include the weekends at each end of a break.
When do the 2026 school terms start and end?
| Term | Group A | Group B |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | Sunday 11 January to Thursday 21 May 84 school days | Monday 12 January to Friday 22 May 82 school days |
| Term 2 | Sunday 7 June to Thursday 3 December 120 school days | Monday 8 June to Friday 4 December 120 school days |
| Total | 204 school days | 202 school days |
Group A has 204 school days in 2026 and Group B has 202. The whole difference sits in Term 1 (84 days against 82); Term 2 is 120 days for both. Part of it is Hari Raya: before the March break KPM gave Group B two extra days off and Group A one.
Which extra festive days did KPM add?
On top of public holidays, KPM gave schools extra days off around three festivals. The circular states that these days do not have to be replaced, so schools will not add make-up days later in the year.
| Festival | Festival date | Extra KPM days, Group A | Extra KPM days, Group B |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | Tuesday 17 February and Wednesday 18 February | Sunday 15 February, Monday 16 February and Thursday 19 February | Monday 16 February, Thursday 19 February and Friday 20 February |
| Hari Raya Aidilfitri | Saturday 21 March and Sunday 22 March | Thursday 19 March | Thursday 19 March and Friday 20 March |
| Deepavali | Sunday 8 November | Monday 9 November | Tuesday 10 November (all states except Sarawak) Monday 9 November (Sarawak only) |
Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 and is not a public holiday in Sarawak, which is why Sarawak gets a separate KPM day. KPM's own November count for Group B (19 school days) leaves Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November free for schools outside Sarawak.
Which festivals fall inside a school break?
- Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Saturday 21 March and Sunday 22 March (all states): inside the term 1 break
- Pesta Kaamatan, Saturday 30 May and Sunday 31 May (Sabah and Labuan): inside the mid-year break
- Hari Gawai Dayak, Monday 1 June and Tuesday 2 June (Sarawak): inside the mid-year break
- Christmas, Friday 25 December (all states): inside the year-end break
What about 2027?
KPM has confirmed one 2027 date so far: the new school year starts on Monday 4 January 2027 for both Group A and Group B. The 2027 term breaks have not been published yet. See what is confirmed for 2027.
